JOHN BARRY

John Barry MEDIA: Pastels mainly, but also other media (watercolour, oils, acrylics)

SUBJECT MATTER: Landscapes, portraits, aviation

BACKGROUND

John is a largely self-taught artist but says doing workshops with good tutors has improved his techniques and understanding.

Living on Banks Peninsula John doesn’t have to travel far to find inspiring land and sea scapes. He uses a sketch pad and camera to capture the imagery and then works the results into paintings in his studio.

John says:

“I let the subject dictate which medium to use but generally prefer to work in pastel since it combines drawing and painting simultaneously. People’s faces fascinate me and I would do more portraits if there was a demand. I like to include figures in my landscapes whenever appropriate as this enlivens them and provides a sense of scale. My past experience of 35 years in the RNZAF has given me the chance to dabble in Aviation Art and several of my pictures are now in the Air Force Museum. I do commissioned works from time to time but mostly sell at local exhibitions.”

John is a member of the Diamond Harbour Art Group. He has won awards at and is also a member of the following art societies: Town & Country Society of Artists, Canterbury Pastel Artists and Pastel Artists of New Zealand (Foundation member).
